On September 12-13, 2022, the Saint Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted the ‘Saint Petersburg — Myanmar’ Business Forum.

During the event, the participants discussed the possibilities of strengthening cooperation between the Northern Capital and Myanmar in the fields of medicine, education, culture, tourism, industry, and agriculture.

The Forum was moderated by Ekaterina Lebedeva, Vice President of the Saint Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Vyacheslav Kalganov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of Saint Petersburg.

The delegation of Myanmar included Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the Russian Federation Mr. Lwin Wu, Secretary General of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Secretary General of the Textile Manufacturers Association of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Ms. Khain Khain Nue, President of the Myanmar-Russian Business Development Association Mr. Tan Zo, as well as representatives of companies from different industries.

During his welcoming speech, Vladimir Katenev, President of the Saint Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that “the history of the creation of the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce began in 1919, and the Saint Petersburg Chamber – in 1921, so we can say that we are brothers. In addition, an agreement on cooperation between the Federation of Chambers of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Chamber of Commerce of the Russian Federation was signed in 2006. We have a common mission to develop trade and economic relations between our countries. At the moment, the trade turnover between Saint Petersburg and Myanmar is no more than 10 million dollars, which indicates a huge potential for the development of trade relations between our countries. I am sure that the signing of the cooperation agreement will increase the volume of cooperation.” Furthermore, the President of the Saint Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry drew attention to the fact that Myanmar students who study Russian language and culture become goodwill ambassadors.

Evgeny Grigoriev, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations of Saint Petersburg, addressed the guests of the conference on behalf of the Governor of Saint Petersburg Alexander Beglov: “We are meeting at a difficult time when international relations are being tested. The Northern Capital of Russia continues to expand and deepen business contacts. The Asian vector is becoming the key one today. Saint Petersburg and Myanmar have many promising areas of cooperation.” Evgeny Grigoriev reminded that next year the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations will be celebrated.

During the business forum "Saint Petersburg – Myanmar" the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg Nikolay Bondarenko also attended several events. Speaking about inter-parliamentary cooperation, Nikolay Bondarenko, on behalf of the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, expressed readiness to provide the Myanmar side with comprehensive assistance in matters of lawmaking.

The document will be an important step in solving industry issues, first of all, in finding ways to enter the Russian market, as well as in finding partners, representatives, distributors and importers in Russia.
Mikhail Cherepanov held talks on cooperation and extended the invitation to participate in the IMBRICS+ Forum on November 24-26, 2022.
